Last month, Novi Sad witnessed one of the most tragic incidents in recent Serbian history – the collapse of the railway station canopy, which claimed 14 lives. This disaster not only exposed structural weaknesses in the station but also unveiled deep systemic failures in governance and accountability.

The canopy, over 50 years old, had endured decades of neglect and weather. However, it failed under the weight of its "modernization." The latest reconstruction included adding steel and glass elements without proper static calculations. These additions, conducted under the banner of "progress," triggered the catastrophic collapse.
Key questions arose: How could such a structure pass inspection and obtain an occupancy permit? Official responses, amplified by pro-government media, provided little clarity. Claims that everything was done "by the book" stood in stark contrast to the evidence brought forward.
Protests: Red Paint and Bloody Hands

Streets were painted red, and handprints symbolizing "bloody hands" were plastered on government buildings. Protesters carried banners like "You are guilty. State-affiliated media quickly moved to control the narrative. Their strategy revolved around minimizing the culpability of key actors. The Ministry of Construction, Transport, and Infrastructure was portrayed as merely a "financier," while technical failures were shifted to contractors. The arrest of 11 individuals was touted as evidence of accountability, despite glaring questions about how such negligence was sanctioned.
Meanwhile, media coverage often deflected systemic critique, focusing instead on emotional stories about the victims. Proposals to "commemorate the site" with a memorial seemed like an attempt to pacify public outrage rather than address the underlying issues.
